Creativity is the lifeblood of musicians and artists. However, without that spark of motivation, the flow is often disrupted. Motivation has been a topic of interest for decades, and studies have shown that it can be difficult to maintain.

Music composition is often a process that requires motivation. An atmosphere of creativity and exploration is needed for it to happen. A composer needs to feel like they are discovering something new, something innovative in the music they compose.

Motivation can be hard to find when you have external and internal pressures for new content, while you, as the artist, are also trying to explore your creative impulses. In many cases, it forces composers to avoid the creative process altogether in order to satisfy the expectations of others.

We are bombarded with distractions from everyday life such as school, work, family obligations, and various other commitments. These distractions can make it hard for any person – including creatives – to find inspiration to create something new.

For musicians, there are many different kinds of motivation: material or non-material. The most common motivation for musicians is the emotional one. Most people would however say that emotional motivation is not enough. Nevertheless, it can be powerful, when used properly.

The first step in motivating a musician is to find out what they want from music. It could be something that is more tangible like money or fame, or it could be something that is more abstract like a certain feeling of accomplishment. Once you know what your motivation is, make sure that you give yourself the opportunity to achieve it as much as possible. If you are looking for money and validation then give them opportunities where they stand the best chance of getting those things and not just opportunities because you feel sorry for them or want to.
